Adolph Heinrich Joseph Sutro, originator of the Sutro Tunnel in Nevada and well-known figure in San Francisco, born of Jewish parents in 1830 at Aix-la-Chapelle in Germany, left school at sixteen, but continued his education by reading voraciously. Silver milling company owned by Adolph Sutro. Sutro developed and owned a silver mill in Dayton, Nevada, in 1861. He developed, was the major stockholder of, and was general superintendent of the Sutro Tunnel in the Comstock Lode, Virginia City, Nev., which drained excess water from the mines of that area.
